Ideal wedding day schedule

Writer: Lisa Jade PhotographyLisa Jade Photography

Planning a wedding can feel like juggling a hundred tiny details, and one of the trickiest parts is nailing down the schedule. You want the day to flow smoothly, with plenty of time to savour each moment without anyone feeling rushed—or worse, bored! If you’re wondering what the ideal UK wedding schedule looks like, don’t worry...I’ve got you covered with a timeline that balances it all.

Morning: Getting Ready (7:00 AM – 11:30 AM)

The morning of your wedding sets the tone for the day, so start it off right. Depending on your ceremony time, aim to wake up early enough to enjoy a relaxed pace.

  • 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM: Wake up, have a light breakfast (you’ll need it!)

  • 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Hair and makeup for the bridal party begins. If you’re the bride, you’ll likely go last to ensure everything is fresh and lasts as long as possible. It's during this time that those detail shots will be captured—rings, shoes, bouquet, and your wedding attire.

  • 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Time for getting dressed! Aim to do this earlier than you need to avoid feeling rushed, hot and flustered.

Grooms typically have a simpler morning but should still leave plenty of time to suit up, relax, and maybe enjoy a celebratory drink with their groomsmen.

Ceremony: (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM)

The ceremony is the heart of your wedding day. In the UK, most ceremonies start between midday and 2:00 PM.

  • 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Guests begin arriving. Make sure there’s a plan for ushers or coordinators to guide them to their seats.

  • 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: The ceremony itself. Civil ceremonies usually take about 20-30 minutes, while religious ones may be up to an hour or even longer.

  • 1:30 PM – 2:00 PM: The confetti toss followed by lot's of congratulations from your guests.

Afternoon: Drinks and Photos (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM)

After the ceremony, it’s time to let everyone relax and enjoy themselves.

  • 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM: Drinks reception begins. Serve some light canapés to keep hunger at bay.

  • 3:00 PM – 3:30 PM: Group shots. No one wants to do this straight after their ceremony and prior planning for this will streamline the process so you don't feel like your entire drinks reception is spent taking photos.

  • 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM: Whilst your guests are being called through for the wedding breakfast, it's the perfect time for your couples portraits. You're announced in last, so instead of hanging around waiting , it just makes sense!

Wedding Breakfast and Speeches (3:00 PM – 5:30 PM)

The wedding breakfast is a highlight of the day—and a chance to refuel!

  • 4:00 PM – 4:30 PM: Speeches! Traditionally, the father of the bride, groom, and best man speak, but absolutely mix this up as you wish. I go in to more detail of why speaking before eating is a strong recommendation here.

  • 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM: It's time to eat drink and be merry. Three course meals are the most common feasting options however extravagant buffets, sharing boards and food vans are becoming firm favourites.

Evening: Party Time! (6:00 PM – Midnight)

Now it’s time to let loose and celebrate.

  • 6:30 PM – 7:00 PM: Evening guests begin arriving.

  • 7:00 PM – 7:30 PM: The cake cutting and first dance kick off the evening festivities.

  • 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM: The DJ or band will play their first set.

  • 9:00 PM: Serve evening food. A pizza van or hog roast always goes down well.

  • 10:30 PM – Midnight: Time for a final dance with your evening entertainments second set before you're all carted off to bed!

Final Tips for a Stress-Free Wedding Day Schedule

  1. Pad Your Timeline: Always build in a little buffer time to handle delays.

  2. Delegate: Assign someone to keep the day running smoothly (a wedding coordinator is the dream but an organised friend works perfectly too).

  3. Enjoy the Moment: Don’t stress over hiccups—these thing happen and they’ll make great stories later!
