Love Languages

Writer: Lisa Jade PhotographyLisa Jade Photography

There are 5 of them and we all feel and express love a little differently. What makes one person feel warm and fuzzy might not even register for someone else — and that’s where the concept of Love Languages comes in.

Dr. Gary Chapman introduced the notion that we each have a preferred way of giving and also receiving love. When our love language is “spoken,” we feel seen, valued, and connected. So, whether you're in a long-term relationship or just starting to explore love, understanding the 5 Love Languages can be such a game-changer.

So, what are they...?

1. Words of Affirmation

For some people, words really matter. Compliments, encouragement, sweet notes, or even a simple “I love you” will go a long way. If this is your love language, you probably light up when someone expresses their appreciation out loud.

💡 If this is your partner: Leave a handwritten note on their pillow or send a thoughtful message just because.

2. Quality Time

It’s not about just being in the same room—it’s about being totally present. People who value quality time crave meaningful connection through undivided attention. No phones, no distractions—just you and them.

💡 If this is your partner: Plan a screen-free evening with a walk, dinner, or just chatting over tea.

3. Receiving Gifts

This isn’t about being materialistic—it’s about the thought behind the gesture. Whether it’s a bunch of flowers, a present from a trip, or something handmade, gifts are a physical symbol of love and thoughtfulness.

💡 If this is your partner: Surprise them with their favourite treat or a little something “just because.”

4. Acts of Service

For these folks, actions speak louder than words. Doing something helpful—like making breakfast, folding the laundry, or running errands—can feel like a true expression of love. It shows that you care enough to make their life a little easier.

💡 If this is your partner: Do something for them that they normally do themselves—bonus points if they don’t have to ask!

5. Physical Touch

This love language is all about physical connection. Hugs, hand-holding, kisses, a gentle touch on the arm—it’s about closeness, comfort, and warmth. It’s not always about intimacy, but rather the small, everyday gestures that say “I’m here.”

💡 If this is your partner: Cuddle on the sofa or hold hands during a walk—small touches have a big impact.

Why Love Languages Matters

When you and your partner tune in to each other’s love languages, you’ll connect more deeply, avoid miscommunications, and feel more secure in your relationship.

So, which one resonates with you most? You might have one clear favourite or a mix of a few—and the same goes for your partner. Talk about it, explore it, and most importantly, have fun with it. Love isn’t one-size-fits-all, and that’s what makes it so exciting!
